God creates intentionally. This statement in true for the entirety of creation and it is also true for each individual. God created you intentionally, to be the person, the man or woman you are. You were meant to have your unique personality and combination of gifts, abilities, tendencies. Even your perceived weaknesses or imperfections are not a surprise to God, and he intends them for your salvation and His glory.
God not only creates each on of us, but He also anoints and calls each of us. We were made for a purpose. When He anoints us, God does not change our identity. He does not want you to be someone you are not, someone other than who He created you to be. However, His anointing does have consequences, it is meant to transform how we act, how we use the various gifts He has given us. The anointing is pure gift, a blessing from God, but how we respond to being anointed is our responsibility. We must decide how we will live after having received the Lord’s blessing.
The life of King David illustrates well the point that God’s anointing does not change our identity, but rather the way we live, using our natural gifts and abilities for a new and more meaningful purpose. Once he was anointed by Samuel, David did not simply become a holy shepherd. He became King. He did not take on this new role instantly, but from the moment of his anointing he was being made ready to step into the call God had for him.
He had always been a musician, playing the harp in the fields as he cared for the sheep. After being anointed he used his natural talent as musician and poet to write the Psalms, the worship music for the People of God that continues to be used to this day by the Church to offer prayer and praise to God.
As a shepherd, he exercised his strength and courage to protect the sheep from bears and lions. Later he used those same gifts to lead the armies of God to protect his people from the enemies of God. He remained David, but now all that he had was placed at the service of God, for the good of His Kingdom.
We are called to follow David’s example by using the gifts, talents, and abilities that God has given us for the glory of God and to build the Kingdom of God. Let us not waste time denying the gifts we’ve been given or using them simply for our own edification or for this world. God created us intentionally, he blesses, anoints, and calls us, let us live today as if that matters for the glory and honor of His name.
